After using my little nephew's Nikon S570, I've become attached. In my opinion, it's a great camera. It's easy to use and I've been getting really sharp pictures that pop out. Right now I am comparing it to the Panasonic Lumix FH20, which is also a good camera but the Nikon pictures are coming out better. I had frequent flier miles that were about to expire so I had to either fly or buy from one of their affiliates. I got this camera as my older Nikon had some problems due to wear and tear. I had expected high resolution pictures from the S70. What I got was extremely poor quality pictures only bigger.Reviews had mentioned this but the professional reviews rated the camera fairly favorably. I assume that the professionals only tested the camera in the lab. Picture quality at best is pretty bad. At worst, the picture is so blurry as to be impossible to tell what the subject was. A courtroom sketch would have come out better. I realize that some of this had to do with the settings and the fact that it was difficult to remember to change the settings for each shot.

Another problem had to do with the touch screen. It was almost impossible to take a picture without touching one of the icons on the screen. In some cases the picture taking process was reduced to listening to the camera constantly changing some button or other. Reviews had mentioned this but I just thought that people needed to be more careful. It's almost impossible to be careful with this camera. And you can just forget about asking someone to take a picture for you. Very bad design.

I fell with the camera protected in a case and it still broke. It appears that the CCD is mounted on silicon to reduce vibration and that must have torn. Everything on the camera still works but the colors are misaligned yielding purpleish pictures with weird lines throughout. This after only about 300 pictures on the camera. The really sad part is that I wish it had broken earlier so I wouldn't have missed some many one-chance-in-a-lifetime pictures.

I need a camera that is ready in an instant. When hiking in the back country I don't have time to mess with settings when an eagle fight suddenly happens in the sky above me. Whilst this camera takes fairly nice photos, it's very slow to focus. I've missed a few key photos while waiting for the camera to be ready to shoot.

Additionally, I noticed a few months after I got it that the small screws on both sides of the camera had fallen out. One day the side panel just fell off. I have yet to be able to get this fixed but I imagine that a Nikon store should be able to help.

The photos I get from the Nikon S1 are better than excellent. I like to shoot macro photos with the flash turned off, using a tripod. The results are wonderful. The camera is user-friendly. I find the features to be self-explanatory. The unusually small size is very convenient for putting it in my pocket. The dock attaches to my computer in the usb port, making this camera the most straightforward and convenient camera I have ever used, regardless of price. It also produces the best photos of any camera I have ever owned.
There is one negative: the lens is too small. This means that unless the sun is shining brightly above, the photo may become blurred and you need to use a tripod. This is not an issue for me, since almost all my photos are macro and on a tripod. When I travel with this camera, I always take a tripod for all photos.
A second negative is that the camera is fragile and the screen is easily damaged, but that is true for all digital cameras, so that should be a given.
Go to google and search for steves digicams to find sample photos, showing what this camera can do. The camera may be a few years old now, but great quality does not go obsolete!

The ironic thing is, the latch that keeps the memory card in my Canon does not work, but the latch that keeps the battery/mem. card area closed does work... the mem. cards stay in my Nikon fine.

I DO like the AA battery vs. lithium battery; I lose the lithium batteries and they cost my too much to replace. But, five months after owning the camera, I turned it on and got a lens error. It seems that has happened to most everyone who uses this camera. It doesn't seem to matter how well you care for the camera, all of these Nikon S210s seem to get the lens error (I can't speak personally for other Nikon point-and-shoot or CoolPix models). I sent my camera to Nikon and got the lens replaced under warranty. They sent it back and about nine months later the exact same problem occurred and this time Nikon refused to fix it because it had been over six months.

First of all I consider myself as an amateur photographer even though people have paid me for photo shoots. Although I shoot mostly with DSLR's I have had owned many point and shoot cameras. My office decided to buy a few of these cameras because the boss is old school and wanted a camera that used AA batts. This camera is horrible! Don't expect to take action shots with this camera. The delay between when you press the shutter and when it actually takes the picture is about 4-5 sec. Some times you may get lucky and get a picture within 3 sec but that's rarely. The problem is that it takes about 2 sec to just focus and another 2 to take the picture. We use the cameras to take pictures of job sites so I don't take any action shots but because of the delay I've skipped taking some pictures because some times in never even would take the picture. I would just hear the camera trying to focus.

Some times I've tried the camera to take macro pictures of equipment name plates and even with the macro setting on the pictures would be blurry. We have 3 of these cameras and none of them have ever had a focused macro picture. I've found that my cell phone camera takes better macro pictures.

We've had these 3 cameras for 2 years now and the only reason why they still work is because everyone in the office tries to get the other Canon cameras that we have before they have to take these cameras.

For the most part, this camera looks good, quick response and the battery life is great! But the VR feature is not all that and the over all picture quality needs work. Point and shoot cameras are not made for top notch quality photos but for the money you spend, they should be. Right? I want to look into getting the Nikon Coolpix S8000 but read the comments and...poor results with photos.
What is it? Not one point and shoot camera, that I have ever owned, has produced awesome pictures. I am picky and thank goodness for the DSLRs!
I get great results with my D90! Nikon....rethink the way you make your point and shoot coolpix cameras! What are you all holding out for? You all can do better than that! Consumers are paying big bucks for these devices and we get in return, nothing to write home about!

The touch screen is cool and the color of the body itself is aesthetically pleasing, but the menu only shows a picture icon instead of a feature label, so unless you memorize them all it'll be a guessing game. I don't know a lot about photography, so I don't know if these icons are familiar amongst the photography world... maybe they are and it's no problem for people who are proficient with digital cameras. Also, the digital screen is very grainy, but the photos were better once they were uploaded. I found the last generation of coolpix cameras to be disappointing at best. This one however has received some massive improvements.

1. It's very very fast

It is speedy in all ways possible. The shutter response time in almost instantaneous. As soon as you click the button the photo takes... give 1 additional second in poor lighting at worst. Best of all is the photo navigation. Remember those old coolpix commercials where Ashton Kutcher would flick his finger and all the photos would scroll by fast? That never worked before, but it actually does on this one. There is no lag whatsoever on photo viewing or changing settings.

2. Excellent photo quality

I was playing with this in best buy and it took very noticeably clearer photos than the other camera in the same price range... including the Canon powershots. Its actually what made me decide to buy one before I learned all the other good stuff.

3. Functionality

It doesn't allow manual exposure and aperture controls because of its size. However they give you a ton of different scene modes to play around with. Some are a little too niche to matter, but all the main ones are there. Also you can do lots of adjustments to a photo that has already been taken. These are made even easier by using the little included stylus which hangs off your camera strap. The camera has a very good feature which allows you to choose the focus of your picture simply by tapping it on the screen. Finally a purpose to using a touch screen besides flashiness.

4. Looks

Its slim and the screen is large and clear. It's very minimalistic with only 2 buttons on the back. The camera looks very traditional and minimalistic, like most of the coolpix range. It doesn't look or feel cheap by all means, but you're not gonna turn heads when you use it... unless of course you're caught scrolling your library (which does feel pretty cool).

The Bad Parts

This camera only has a couple of negative issues. First off, the lens does not retract into the body when you're viewing photos. It means you can switch to shooting really fast, but it also burdens the way in which you can hold your camera. I would have liked to have been able to hold it flat in my palm while looking at my photos. Another problem is that it doesn't use a battery charger, it charges with a usb cable that plugs directly into the camera. It comes with an AC power adapter that you can plug the cable into if you want... kind of like what an ipod uses. I guess it makes everything simpler and you can carry less stuff when you travel, but I like to charge extra batteries while I'm using my camera.

The touchscreen has a slightly matte surface. Which means it gets very dirty very fast. I put a surface shield on this immediately and it has eliminated that problem completely... but it also makes the touch controls slightly less responsive. If you do this, you can still control the camera well with your finger, but it's faster and easier to navigate photos with the stylus.

It works good, it has amazing quality when used just right. Im not to experienced with cameras so to get quick pictures with movement like in partyes and such you cant really use the auto mode like you can with some cameras, you will have to mess with some other options. This is my third in the Nikon Coolpix line, and I love it just as much as my previous ones! If you're a fan of any Nikon Coolpix, this will certainly be something you like!

My only disappointment is that there isn't a "Sports" setting anymore, which was something I used a lot on my older models. However, the camera takes such fast pictures that it hasn't really become a problem as of yet.

Battery life is good... haven't taken the time to see how many pictures it has per charge, but it's held up through at least 200 pictures at a graduation I went to recently without any battery indications.

The charger is different than previous the Nikon Coolpix cameras I've owned, as it plugs directly into the camera as opposed to having to remove the battery. I'm not sure whether I like this, because the AC OUT cover is kind of stubborn to come out. Again, it's nothing that's become a problem.

The HD movie is pretty cool. I haven't recording much with it, but the quality on it is wonderful. The record button is on the back of the camera, by the menu, which makes it extremely easy to switch from camera to movie. No setting change! This is definitely one of my favorite features, and is perfect if you like to take both stills and video!

The zoom is great, and takes crisp shots from a good distance!

The smart portrait feature is fun, but probably not something I'll really use. It's a good replacement if you don't want to use the self-timer, but again, it's kind of a pointless feature. Still interesting, though.

I haven't played with the Subject Tracker yet, to be honest. I'll add more to this once I get a chance to mess around with it for a little while.

This camera rocks! The pictures are so crystal clear that it is like looking at them in person! I also like the 7x optical zoom, which you are able to use during video recording. It has easy buttons to operate and there are tons of options to play with and very user friendly. It also takes close-up pictures up to 3mm that are NOT blurry! It has lots of options to have automatically set and very easy to switch to when chanigng scenery or from portrait to landscape. It also has the option of choosing one of your own pics as a screen saver every time you turn on the camera. I like that I can change colors of photos (i.e. black & white, sepia) with the press of a button or use the "vivid color" option. Don't let the size of this little fellow fool you. Although basically a point-and-shoot, this small camera produces pictures that are comparable to the bigger models.
In fact, it was a bigger model that led me to the COOLPIX S6000. I own, and love, my Nikon D300. The pictures it takes are nothing short of amazing. However, the weight and bulk of it sometimes get in the way of life. I just purchased this camera on a Nikon promotion for Mothers Day. It included a case and a Sand Dish 2g card. I would like to tell you of some issues I had with this camera and have since cleared it up with a call to Nikon.

Charging the battery:

First, is how to charge the battery. You must plug the a/c charger into a electrical outlet.....THEN.....plug the adapter into the charge port of the camera. If you try it any other way, it won't charge. The quick start, manual on CD and the downloadable manual from Nikon............spell it out the wrong way.

Firmware update:

My camera came with version 1.0. If you go to [...] you will find a new version is waiting for you to download. They also have an illustrated file to download to help you do the update. The SD card is formatted by the camera........... .......a PC will not read the card. My XP pro did not read the card. Therefore, you cannot copy the firmware to the SD disk. My Windows 7 machine did read it, copied it and I made an update to my camera. So your XP machine might not be able to do the update.

Another issue is how to power the camera during the update. The instructions were not clear to me and a call to Nikon approves of this approach. Use a fully charged battery as the only power source and you will be able to complete the update.

The update will change the HD video from 24 to 30fps.

If you buy a SD card...check with the 200 page manual to see what cards are approved. Write times vary with manufacture. The Sand Disk, I felt, had a rapid write time.

I am pleased with the camera. It is packed with features that Amazon points out during camera description. It should be noted that in AUTO, the camera picks out what it likes to make your shot. AUTO is a place to START making your perfect photo. The camera has many features to fine tune that shot into a family treasure. Spend some time and try ALL the features and see what happens to the same photo shot. Its part of the fun of digital cameras. I don't mind saying, I resisted digital and stayed with film for many years. This camera will allow you to be creative in a much faster pace. Is it going to replace a 650$ SLR. No way. It will allow you to carry a very cool pocket camera to get those "grab me shots" or just really get into digital photography.
